PISS TEST – “Leather Jackets in the Heat” EP
Right out of the gate, we’re treated to a witty and scathing indictment of the codification of punk fashion and culture. “Punk’s not dead/ it’s just boring / New York’s Alright / but I’m snoring.” Most of the time, I can’t stand this self-referential nonsense, but they pull it off with tact. I also agree a lot of the time, and if I lived in Portland, I’d probably feel suffocated by superficiality, too. The A-side reminds me of a more pissed PROLETARIAT at their most straight forward, especially the Boston Not LA tracks, with a slight amount of angularity and angry, quasi-accented snarling vocals with reverb, and most of the songs driven by the repetitive bass hooks. With the exception of the vocals, the B-side listens like a completely different record, though one that’s just as good. Scrappy, melodic, melancholy early ‘80s style hardcore that could’ve come from LA or Chicago or Texas, or none of these, and is moving in its bleakness. I legitimately can’t tell if the lyrics to “Used to Skate,” as in “I’ll always drink / I used to skate” are about the singer or someone else, but either way, that’s some honesty. ... the 7" also made the top tens of Grace Ambrose, Lydia Athanasopoulou, Dan Goetz, Robert Collins and Fred Schrunk.
PISS TEST: Self-titled: 7” EP
At its core we’re talking about (mostly) mid-tempo punk stuff with a serious yen for early ‘80s hardcore. Something about the way the singer barks the lyrics, though, adds a bit of Proletariat to the proceedings, which is a nice additional dimension. Four tunes, not a clunker in the bunch. – Jimmy Alvarado (Taken By Surprise)
